The Philosophy of Abortion

 —  —

San Diego Oasis, In Person Only, 5500 Grossmont Center Drive Suite 269 , La Mesa, CA 91942

By now we’re all familiar with the pro and con arguments surrounding America’s most contentious political debate—abortion. But how aware are we of the often-unstated philosophical positions underpinning those familiar arguments? Join us for this philosophical inquiry into the big questions the abortion debate draws to the surface: When does life begin? What do different religions and wisdom traditions say about that? What does liberty or freedom really mean? Do we own our own bodies? How does the 14th amendment (granting a “right to life”) intersect with the 1st amendment (prohibiting the establishment of a state religion)? No matter your current views, join us for this important work.

The Great Philosophers: David Hume

 — (PST, UTC-08) — (PST, UTC-08)

San Diego Oasis at Rancho Bernardo, 17170 Bernardo Center Dr., Rancho Bernardo, CA 92128

Join us for another in our series on the Great Philosophers, this time David Hume. Another of the British Empiricists, Scottish philosopher David Hume took Locke’s work to its logical conclusion, and shocked the philosophical world in the process. Known as skepticism, Hume’s philosophy openly questioned the existence of God, a radical stance in the early 18th century. Under Hume’s scalpel, no sacred cow was safe—not science, not reason, not theology, not even the existence of the soul. Join us for an inquiry into the brilliant, beloved, and unorthodox mind of David Hume.

The Great Philosophers: Nietzsche

 — (PST, UTC-08) — (PST, UTC-08)

Oasis San Diego, 5500 Grossmont Center Dr #269, La Mesa, California

Join us for another in our series on the Great Philosophers, this time Nietzsche. One of the most compelling figures in all of philosophy, Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) ushers in the modern world by shattering the paradigms of the old. A brilliant scholar and misanthropic outsider, Nietzsche left behind a sprawling, literate body of work that ignited and set aflame the twentieth century. In his merciless critiques of both traditional philosophy and contemporary morality Nietzsche’s infamous utterance “God is dead” and his notoriously misused notion of the Ubermensch (superior human) changed philosophy forever.

The Seven Stone Path

 — (PST, UTC-08) — (PST, UTC-08)

San Diego Vedanta Monastery, 1440 Upas Street, San Diego, CA

In his new book "The Seven Stone Path: An Everyday Journey to Wisdom" Peter Bolland asks three urgent questions: What is wisdom, why do we need it, and how do we get it? After teaching the world's wisdom traditions for 33 years in and out of college classrooms Bolland finds ways to put the life-changing insights of the world's wisdom traditions into the hands of ordinary folks like us. Drawing rich and transformative parallels between Vedanta, Buddhism, Daoism, Stoicism, mysticism and more, this work takes us across all borders--temporal, geographic, and ideological. But this is not a merely theoretical project. The mission is clear--bringing the insights of the world's wisdom traditions to bear on our everyday lives in practical and down-to-earth ways. Free.

The Great Philosophers: John Locke

 — (PST, UTC-08) — (PST, UTC-08)

San Diego Oasis at Rancho Bernardo, 17170 Bernardo Center Dr., Rancho Bernardo, CA 92128

Join me for another in my series on the Great Philosophers, this time, John Locke. Preeminent among the British Empiricists, John Locke (1632-1704) offered a bracing alternative to the earlier rationalist philosophy of Descartes, Leibniz, and Spinoza. Unlike rationalism which argued that knowledge was best built on a foundation of innate or a priori ideas, Locke argued that empirical or sense experience was our sole means of apprehending the world—all of the ideas in our head were a posteriori, or built on perception of the external world. Furthermore, and probably more germane to our everyday lives, Locke famously championed the idea of natural rights, including the right to private property—a notion that would transform the world. Join us for this inquiry into the influential philosophy of John Locke.

The Nature of Love

(PST, UTC-08) (PST, UTC-08)

Rancho Santa Fe Senior Center, 16780 La Gracia, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92091

Join us at the Rancho Santa Fe Senior Center for this free talk on "The Nature of Love." For millennia, philosophers have wondered about love. It is obviously a central, formative and essential human experience. But what is it exactly? What are the different kinds of love? What kinds of errors occur when we mistakenly conflate or mistake one kind of love with another? Do we misuse the word “love?” What are the distinctions between compassion, altruism, aesthetic appreciation, erotic attraction, family or tribal bonding, personal need, pathological obsession, kindness, etc? Working with classical sources and contemporary examples we will examine the experience of love from a number of perspectives and bring clarity to the complex and multi-faceted phenomenon of love. This event is free, but please call to RSVP (858) 756-3041

The Great Philosophers: Karl Marx

 — (PST, UTC-08) — (PST, UTC-08)

San Diego Oasis, In Person Only, 5500 Grossmont Center Drive Suite 269 , La Mesa, CA 91942

While for some “Marxist” is a dirty word, we would be hard-pressed to find a more impactful philosopher than Karl Marx (1818-1883). Who was Marx? What was happening around him? What did he really think of capitalism? What was his analysis of history? As a Jewish atheist, was what his concept of ultimate reality? And most importantly, what was his vision for the future? His passionate advocacy for economic justice and worker’s rights got him driven out of Germany, then France; so he lived out his life in poverty in London. To this day, Marxist reforms of capitalism (the 8-hour day, trade unions, profit sharing) and a Marxist critique of art, culture, philosophy, sociology, and a host of other concerns keeps his work in the mainstream.

Old Seeds, New Ground: Growing Christianity in the Third Millennium

 — (PST, UTC-08) — (PST, UTC-08)

First United Methodist Church, 2111 Camino del Rio South, San Diego, CA 92108

Join me as I present a talk called "Old Seeds, New Ground: Growing Christianity in the Third Millenium at the San Diego School of Christianity event "Who is My Neighbor" at First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley. The American religious landscape keeps shifting. Belief in God is down, as is church attendance. When asked to list their religious affiliation, many say “none of the above.” Newly energized conservative movements push their brand of Christian Nationalism in increasingly extreme directions. Meanwhile, Progressive Christians attempt to retain their commitment to the Jesus Movement while reimagining their relationships with scripture, traditional doctrines, and the church. Join us as we chart these shifts and share an inquiry into the status and future of Christianity in America.Following the 60 minute talk and a 30 minute Q&A stay for a light lunch. $10 Register and donate at https://www.fumcsd.org/connect/san-diego-school-of-christian-studies/#donate

The Great Philosophers: Spinoza

 — (PST, UTC-08) — (PST, UTC-08)

San Diego Oasis at Rancho Bernardo, 17170 Bernardo Center Dr., Rancho Bernardo, CA 92128

Join us for another in our series on the great philosophers, this time, Baruch Spinoza. A Sephardic Jew of Portuguese ancestry, Spinoza was born in Amsterdam in 1632. Often at odds with the Rabbis of his own immigrant community, Spinoza would go on to wrestle with ideas of God, meaning, and the universe in startling, influential ways. Arguing for an absolute monism, Spinoza believed that God was simply the name of the energy that binds everything together—a kind of pantheism, thus sealing his enemy status in both Jewish and Christian circles. He nevertheless persisted in taking full advantage of the liberal intellectual climate of the Netherlands to further pursue his ideas and change the course of Western religion and philosophy.
