Why It's So Hard To Talk About Racism

 —  —

Zoom Webinar - San Diego Oasis

Why is it so hard, particularly for white people, to talk about racism? Why are conversations about racism often met with anger, fear, and guilt, only to grind to a halt in awkward silence and avoidance? Sociologist and antiracism educator Robin DeAngelo labels these unhelpful responses as “white fragility.” What is “white fragility?” And how is it hindering our efforts to bend the moral arc of history toward justice? Until we recognize, acknowledge, and understand these paralyzing undercurrents, our highest aspirations for true American democracy, justice, and dignity remain unrealized. Dismantling Racism One Insight at a Time

 —  —

Zoom Webinar - San Diego Oasis

Our great unfinished work in the United States, and the world over, is finally coming to terms with racism in authentic, meaningful, and transformative ways. At root racism stems from deep structures within consciousness, which then get codified into repressive hierarchical systems that benefit the in-group at the expense of the out-group. In this inquiry we will do the important work of peeling back the layers of unconscious bias, laying bare the untold history of supremacy, and raise our eyes to the realization of the promise of America – a land where all are created equal. (60 minute Zoom webinar, 30 minute Q&A) $15

What Are Creation Myths Really All About?

 —  —

San Diego Oasis Zoom Webinar

o All around the world ancient people told fantastical tales of the dawn of time and the creation of the universe. What questions were they trying to answer? “Who made the world, and how?” Or were they asking different questions – questions much closer to home, like, “What am I, and what is my place in the cosmos?” Using Joseph Campbell’s four functions of myth, we’ll closely read, analyze, and discuss the creation stories in both Genesis and the Mayan Popul Vuh, looking for insights not into the literal origin of the universe, but into the secrets of our own essential nature and nature of reality itself. 60 Zoom minute presentation, 30 minute Q&A. $15

Marcus Aurelius - The Wisdom of Stoicism

 —  —

San Diego Oasis Zoom

When he wrote about his career challenges, the perils of fame, and the fleeting pleasures of life, Marcus Aurelius knew what he was talking about. Emperor of Rome, leader of legions of soldiers, and philosopher at heart, Marcus left behind for us his journal, one of the most beloved books in the Western canon. At the heart of Stoicism is this notion – that we control almost none of the circumstances of our lives, but we have absolute autonomy over our reactions to them. Like Buddhism in the east, Stoicism offers clear, down to earth, and straightforward guidance for how to navigate this challenging life.
