20th century Christian mystic Thomas Merton (1915-1968) left an indelible mark on the spiritual landscape both within his tradition and all around the world. A Trappist monk, Merton struck a delicate balance between the contemplative life and the New York Times bestsellers list. His autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain became one of the most widely read and influential books of the 20th century. And in the 1960s he became, in Daniel Berrigan’s words, “the conscience of the peace movement.” His intensive study of Eastern philosophy, especially Buddhism, while initially troubling to many of his Catholic followers, became a blueprint for how to build meaningful dialogue between religious traditions.
