Inside the Electoral College

 —  —

Zoom Webinar

o Every elected official in America, from local school board to the U.S Senate, is elected by popular vote – except one: the President of the United States. Ever since 1789, the Constitution requires that the President be chosen not by popular vote, but by a curious body called the Electoral College. What is it? How does it work? Does it work? Join me for an insider’s view into this curious American institution. Even though I have my doubts about the fairness of this 18th century process, I was honored by an opportunity to serve as one of California’s 55 electors in the 2020 Presidential election. I’ll share details about this experience, and about my reaction to the events of January 6, when an angry mob attacked the capitol with the expressed purpose of preventing the Senate ratification of the Electoral College vote. 60 minute webinar, 30 minute dialogue. $15

The Divine Feminine in India and the West

 —  —

Zoom Webinar

Swami Harinamananda of the San Diego Vedanta Monastery and comparative religion professor Peter Bolland join forces again for this dialogue exploring the Divine Feminine in Indian and western mythology. In the deepest traditions of India the ground of being is understood as fundamentally feminine. Shakti and her manifestation Mahadevi – the Great Mother Goddess – is not only the source of all the gods – she is their power, and ours. We will decode these myths in dialogue and draw life-guiding wisdom to practice in our everyday lives. (60 minute Zoom webinar, 30 minute Q&A). $15

American Buddha - The Wisdom of Walt Whitman

 —  —

Zoom Webinar

In this class we’ll focus on a close reading of Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself,” the first poem in his 1855 masterpiece Leaves of Grass. As we move through extended passages, Whitman’s prophetic voice takes hold and a bracing vision of American individualism rises into view. Equally worldly and transcendent, carnal and spiritual, Whitman artfully blends the contrasts of life into a living mystery that shimmers with beauty and power. It is the sacred in all things, especially in us, that Whitman celebrates. (60 minute Zoom webinar, 30 minute Q&A) $15

The Four Agreements

 —  —

Zoom Webinar

After his near-fatal car accident, Mexican physician Don Miguel Ruiz became an apprentice of a Nagual or shaman in the Toltec tradition. His groundbreaking book The Four Agreements, a distillation of that indigenous American wisdom, has been translated into 48 languages and remained on the New York Times bestsellers list for ten years. At the heart of his work is the idea that our assumptions (our agreements) shape the quality of our lives, and when we craft new ways of thinking we greatly increase our freedom and power. Join us for this close look at each of the Four Agreements, and their intersections with philosophy, psychology, and world spirituality. (60 minute Zoom webinar, 30 minute Q&A) $15

Why It's So Hard To Talk About Racism

 —  —

Zoom Webinar - San Diego Oasis

Why is it so hard, particularly for white people, to talk about racism? Why are conversations about racism often met with anger, fear, and guilt, only to grind to a halt in awkward silence and avoidance? Sociologist and antiracism educator Robin DeAngelo labels these unhelpful responses as “white fragility.” What is “white fragility?” And how is it hindering our efforts to bend the moral arc of history toward justice? Until we recognize, acknowledge, and understand these paralyzing undercurrents, our highest aspirations for true American democracy, justice, and dignity remain unrealized. Dismantling Racism One Insight at a Time

 —  —

Zoom Webinar - San Diego Oasis

Our great unfinished work in the United States, and the world over, is finally coming to terms with racism in authentic, meaningful, and transformative ways. At root racism stems from deep structures within consciousness, which then get codified into repressive hierarchical systems that benefit the in-group at the expense of the out-group. In this inquiry we will do the important work of peeling back the layers of unconscious bias, laying bare the untold history of supremacy, and raise our eyes to the realization of the promise of America – a land where all are created equal.
