The Wisdom of Judaism

 —  —

Zoom Webinar Through San Diego Oasis

o For over 3,000 years Judaism has been at the heart of western civilization. Its scriptures, heroes, history, and wisdom have informed western consciousness from within in too many ways to count. Our theology, our ethics, our laws, and our concept of what it means to be a human being all trace back to the teachings of Judaism, lending credence to the saying, “We are all Jews.” Join us as we trace the evolution of Judaism’s key voices, insights, and movements from Genesis to today. (60 minute webinar & 30 minute Q&A) $15

CANCELLED: The Mandukya Upanishad and the Mystical Christ

 —  —

San Diego Vedanta Monastery, 1440 Upas Street, San Diego, CA

Join me for this Saturday morning lecture at the beautiful San Diego Vedanta Monastery on Upas Street near Balboa Park. The Mandukya Upanishad is the shortest, but according to Shankara the most essential of all the Upanishads. In it we find a clear distillation of the entire Vedanta project, and a direct four-stage process for Realization. And when we set its insights alongside the mystical Christ we find a beautiful, challenging, and inspiring alignment that illuminates the commonality shared by all the world’s wisdom traditions.

Join me for this in-person only talk at the beautiful Rancho Santa Fe Senior Center on "The Power of Gratitude." Free. Be careful how you answer – your happiness depends on it.

Guest Speaking at Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship - Zoom Event

 —  —

Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

Just us via Zoom. I'll be the guest speaker at the Sunday morning service at Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. My talk is called "Spirituality in Action." Is it enough to have all the right ideas, doctrines, and understandings? Or is what we do just as important as what we believe? What is wisdom is not something you know, but something you are? Join us as we consider what Buddhism, Confucianism, and the parables of Jesus have to teach us about these perennial questions. How might we better put our spiritual principles into practice to co-create a world that works for everyone?

The Mythology of Christmas

 —  —

Zoom Webinar Through San Diego Oasis

Christians all around the world celebrate the birth of Christ in myriad ways. Here in the United States Christmas has snowballed into something so massive, so powerful, that its gravitational pull draws together elements from disparate cultures and traditions all over the world. Christians celebrate the birth of a 1st century Israeli Jew with Roman rituals, Germanic symbols, Norse mythology, Dutch folk tales, British customs, American pop culture and, by now, just about everything but the kitchen sink. Join us as we explore the many tendrils and roots of this beautiful holiday and tease out the underlying mythological significance and spiritual meaning of these familiar images, icons, and songs. Did early Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus? What sort of gift-giving god is Santa Claus? Why cut down a tree, drag it in the house, and cover it with lights? Caroling door to door? Reindeer? Mistletoe? Getting drunk at the company Christmas party? Ugly sweaters? Turns out all of these customs have ancient roots. Is Christmas even a “Christian” holiday? It seems simple enough, but nothing this good is ever simple. (60 minute webinar presentation, 30 minute Q&A) $15 Register here: https://san-diego.oasiseverywhere.org/product/the-mythology-of-christmas/

Thanksgiving and the Consciousness of Gratitude

 —  —

Zoom Webinar Through San Diego Oasis

The Thanksgiving holiday is an ideal time to reflect on the meaning and power of gratitude. A traditional harvest festival, Thanksgiving gives us a communal opportunity to consciously shift out of our normal worried mind stuck, as it usually is, on how there’s never enough – never enough money, never enough time, never enough love – and move instead into the awareness that we have everything we need. “Gratitude,” wrote the Roman philosopher Seneca “is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” In other words, developing the consciousness of gratitude opens the door to the cultivation of all of the virtues – compassion, kindness, courage, serenity, and satisfaction. Is gratitude an endpoint, a state only realized after I get everything I want, or is it a decision I make in the here and now regardless of outer conditions? Join us as we explore this and other questions surrounding the transformative power of the consciousness of gratitude. $15 Register here: https://san-diego.oasiseverywhere.org/product/thanksgiving-and-the-consciousness-of-gratitude/

The Heart of Islam

 —  —

Zoom Webinar Through San Diego Oasis

Islam is many things. Perceptions of Islam, especially here in the west, vary wildly. Many Americans and Europeans hold a negative view of Islam. Yet Islam is the second largest religion in the world, and one of the three Abrahamic faiths alongside Judaism and Christianity. Muslims worship the same God as Jews and Christians, and Islam reveres all of the earlier prophets like Jesus, Moses, and Abraham. Join us as we go beyond the smoke and noise to reveal the heart of Islam, a spiritual way of life that honors faith, family, morality, virtue, and service. Extremists may get all the attention, but all over the world 1.6 billion Muslims live inclusive, pluralistic lives in harmony with their Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and secular neighbors. (60 minute presentation, 30 minute Q&A) $15 Register here: https://san-diego.oasiseverywhere.org/product/the-heart-of-islam/

Write, speak, sing, teach

"When life does not find a singer to sing her heart she produces a philosopher to speak her mind." ~ Kahlil Gibran

I speak, write, teach, and sing about a wide range of spiritual and philosophical things.

I write a column for Unity Magazine. I publish a blog called Thinking Through where all my published writing is gathered. I lead guided meditations online on the Insight Timer Meditation app. I have a YouTube channel called Peter Bolland TV where I post videos of some of my talks and songs and more. And I lecture all over town in a wide variety of venues. All of my work is about one thing: shaping the insights of the world's wisdom traditions into tools we can use to enrich our lives. And all that happens when I'm not at Southwestern College in Chula Vista being a philosophy and humanities professor and department chair.

I also sing, play guitar, write songs, make albums, and perform regularly throughout the San Diego area.

I've been playing music and writing songs my whole life. My first solo album was called Frame, released in 2002. It earned a Best Americana Album nomination at the San Diego Music Awards. Then I had a band called The Coyote Problem from 2002-2010. We won the Best Americana Album prize for both of our albums, Wire in 2005 and California in 2007 at the San Diego Music Awards. Quit while you're ahead, right? I fired myself from my own band so I could focus on all of my other projects, including my solo work. The result? My album Two Pines, available now.Two Pines Album Cover

I am also a session musician playing a wide variety of instruments on other people's albums, things like acoustic and electric guitar, lap steel guitar, Dobro, mandolin, banjo, and harmonica.

But these daydobros I spend most of my off-campus time speaking and leading workshops at a wide variety of venues, (The Chopra Center, The San Diego Vedanta Monastery, San Diego Oasis, The Osher Life Long Learning Institute, Vision: A Center for Spiritual Living, First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, and many more) about all of the things I've learned through the years about the world's wisdom traditions. If you'd like to come experience one of my many multimedia lecture presentations or long-form classes about the life-changing transformational wisdom of world mythology, comparative religion, and practical philosophy, visit the Calendar page for a complete schedule of upcoming events.
